Who is Lucifer? Is he a fallen angel?

Because of Christian doctrine, many people are afraid of Lucifer, but “he” is a simple mythical motif based on the planet Venus, not a “fallen angel” or the Devil. The story of his “falling” is part of Venus mythology as well, an astrotheological motif.

As always, please like, tweet and share so others may be free of this often crippling fear.

As I state in Who Was Jesus? Fingerprints of The Christ, the pertinent biblical verses at Isaiah 14:12-14 that discuss ascending into heaven purport to represent the bragging of the character “Heylel,” translated as Lucifer, the “Light-Bearer.” Per Strong’s (H1966), however, Heylel or Helel could also refer either to a king of Babylon or to the “morning star,” i.e., the planet Venus. In fact, one of Venus’s epithets in Greek was “Phosphoros,” or “Light bearer.” The RSV translates the term “Helel” at Isaiah 14:12 as, “O Day Star, son of Dawn!” In the Septuagint (3rd-1st cent. BCE), the word “Helel” is rendered as “(H)eosphoros,” which just happens to be the name of a very old Greek god/titan who served as one aspect of the planet Venus. This god Eosphoros is mentioned in Homer’s Iliad (23:226) and in Hesiod’s Theogony (378), dating to the 9th and 8th centuries BCE, respectively.

  1. Hi Acharya

I find this article to be extremely interesting, I once read a book called what and where is Hell by Dr. Malachi Z. York, and it said Devil means “false accuser”, or Ibliys which in Arabic means rebellious, and the word Satan means liar in wait. It also describes Satan better yet Lucifer as the Son of Dawn, in 2 Corinthians 11:14 it says Satan changes himself to appear as an angel of light, and in Luke 10:18 Jesus said, I saw Satan fall like lighting from heaven. According to the secret teachings of all ages by Manly P. Hall, Lucifer means light bearer, Lucis=light, fere=to bring forth. Edward Waite in his book of ceremonial Magic claims Lucifer or Lucifuge as it is written,is a chief of the demonic hierarchy. Yes I happen to be a student of the occult as well, not in practice but just as a learner. I know your position regarding Lucifer is mythological, based on the Astro-theological myths of older cultures, which makes sense and could very well be the case, my only problem with adapting such views is my adherence to the reality of the spiritual realm, forgive me but I’m some what of an occultist. Which finally brings me to my question since you think or adhere to Satan,Lucifer ect., being purely mythological what do you think about Demonic possessions, and exorcism’s, do you think there real?

    1. How come possession happen in Abraham religions?
      1. They are mental.

Lucifer was a Roman God.except that he is a war god.Roman’s took him from the Greeks. His name is Phospheros. Canaanites God is Shachar.
      Satan is taken from Ahriman.

  2. This was a bit shorter than expected unfortunately, as I love reading about this subject. Very informative nontheless. 🙂 Religious Science has been a passion of mine since I turned 15 and reading up on the Biblical Lucifer as well as his equivalents in pre-monotheistic Pagan religions was (is) fascinating and a bit like the Neverending Story. There’s always something new to discover. I actually only just wrote an article for our online-group about Lucifer the Lightbringer as the “forgotten Lord of self-gnosis” and his (in my opinion) unbroken relationship with God as well as Lilith. (Yes, yes… I included her despite the fact most scholars dismiss any notion of her and the story of the Midrash/Talmud, Dead Sea Scrolls and the much later Alphabet of Ben Sira.) Anyways, thank you for this wonderful page which I stumbled upon by coincidence just a few days ago. Bookmarked!

  3. Lucifer had no association with satan until the church made it so. Much like the spanish missionaries did with native american beliefs in my area, who worshiped a mountain and to discourage this, named it Mt. Diablo.
One of my favorite descriptions of satan comes from the great book written by Jeremy Leven titled; Satan: His Psychotherapy And Cure By The Unfortunate Dr. Kassler, J.S.P.S. Saying, when early humans were just becoming self-aware, satan was born from imagination and fear, when we decided that we weren’t really a part of nature, but separate.”The shadow cast by God’s bright and pleasing sun, the human mind(ego).” The bringer of light (knowledge) but also pain and suffering with the illusion of being separate.
Growing pains. Evolution takes a loooong time. We made it out of Africa, still a ways to go.

  4. Truth be known, he was an exhalted angel, that wanted to be like God and have that kind of attention. He rebelled against God and so did 1/3 of the angels. They were cast out of heaven to earth because of their disobedience and anger towards God.

    1. Not only what the article says, “Lucifer” is a reference to Jesus as well in 2Peter. It just means someone of significance.

      1. Thanks for pointing out 2 Peter 1:19:

And we have the prophetic word made more sure. You will do well to pay attention to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

The Greek word for “morning star” here is φωσφόρος phōsphoros, which is essentially the same as “Lucifer.”
