Radio program: A pre-Christian crucifix and origins of Gnosticism

Happy Solstice!*

In a program debuting on June 22, 2013, I discuss with Miguel Conner of Aeon Byte Radio the possible Orphic influences on Christianity, including a human figure on a cross that appears to be pre-Christian. This small gemstone of a crucifix was featured on the cover of a popular book on the Jesus myth, giving it renewed notoriety and making it the target of various “debunking” efforts because of its resemblance to Christian iconography.

Nevertheless, as I reveal in my 40-page ebook “A Pre-Christian ‘God’ on a Cross?,” there exist a number of reasons to suspect that this artifact is genuinely ancient and uninfluenced by Christianity. The inscription on the crucifix, “Orpheos Bakkikos,” in itself indicates that the artifact is unrelated to Christianity but is a cult object of the famed pagan mysteries.

Here’s a new Examiner article regarding my ebook and radio program about the possible pre-Christian “god” on a cross, as well as the origins of Gnosticism. Be sure to have a listen!

Scholars reexamine a crucifix that may predate Christianity

Here is Miguel’s write-up of our latest program together:

Our seven year anniversary takes on an odyssey of wonder and discovery. We begin by understanding the mystic Cult of Orpheus and the God Dionysus (and how the amulet made famous in ‘The Jesus Mysteries’ is actually authentic). We learn how it was part of a current of Mystery Religions that influenced the formation of so many mainstream religions and even political empires, and unfortunately all manner of orthodoxy, from India to Rome. Through this fascinating maze, uncovering dangerous truths concerning the machinations of gods and men, we find the origins of the Gnostics. It’s a vast tapestry of solar myths and civic manipulations. From Ancient Egypt to the rise of Christianity, we leave no heretical stone unturned.

Now playing! Per Miguel’s write-up:

Topics discussed:

–The influence the Cult of Orpheus had on Gnosticism and early Christianity, from its theology to its rituals.
–Understanding the stream of Mystery Religions that even gave shape to ancient Judaism.
–Are aliens behind ancient humanity’s gods and creation myths?
–How the Gnostic view of a Cosmic Christ in an astrological realm shifted to that of a carnal Messiah for Rome.
–Understanding the universal concept of the Cross, even used by Plato.
–How India and the Greco-Roman cultures exchanged theologies and informed each other’s religions.
–Evidence pointing that the early church fathers already knew that Jesus was part of a mythic story that existed thousands of years before.
–The secret (and greedy) cult of merchants that truly spearheaded various mainstream religions across the world.

And much more!

Note that Miguel is doing a fundraiser to continue his program. He will use some of the funds to put together an ebook of transcripts of our programs. Please support his work – and mine, by obtaining a copy of my ebook and a monthly subscription!

*Although the solstice technically was the 21st, the ancients perceived the sun to “stand still” – the meaning of “solstice” –  for THREE days, after which it was reborn or resurrected on the 24th. Hence, in the summer we have St. John’s Day on the 24th, while in the winter it is Christ’s Birthday, the two solar figures “born” six months apart.

Christianity and the summer solstice

  1. There is not just one artifact, as someone who is an expert on the subject would know. My paper itself demonstrates dozens of artifacts. My work as a whole provides thousands of pages of the evidence of the unoriginality of Christianity.

Moreover, most of the archaeological and historical record is composed of artifacts, texts and so on with “no date or makers mark [sic].” In order to determine provenance and date, one actually needs to study the artifact, from a scientific perspective, with as much data as possible.

What is “stupid” is the attempt at making conclusions about something one has not even studied. The “gullibility” lies with those who follow their Bible or pastor without question.

    1. Sorry but the experts have examined, and at best the artifact in question is another roman mockery of Christianity or an attempt to preserve their idol worship. And although it is a shame that some follow blindly the biblical texts ,(some at least) they are dated and signed and all referenced material can be carbon dated fairly accurately . This in mind one is left with little to argue without a time machine except to value text and liturgy and remnant societies over unreferenced artifacts when it concerns the past. Greed and hate now,, and then ,perverts the truth every time . Besides nobody now believes without question, but to believe in a biased way prevails. We cannot even fix ourselves or our planet by putting the past on the stand, it’s obvious it’s a hostile witness . And the jury is biased. To present evidence and withhold other is the name of the game. This is a shame on ALL such “scholars”and “experts” . No matter the people, of ANY ignorant kind of mind or feebleness of body deserve better and Jesus teaches to be kind to all gods children and others teach this too. The only people who don’t seem to “get it” are elitist s and selfish people who have a pointless agenda that harms rather than helps us move toward a future of peace and happiness so someday somebody can cure dumbass , among other maladies . But if you think I’m a dumbass for moving towards compromise ,peace and objectivity , without a body count , I might just be a “real” eh hum ,”expert”. No one has the right to deem their religion as the “one”,at least to another( everbody seems to hear god, even if they did they ought to let their god do the talking and not get mad when someone else can’t hear) , cause its the way we conduct ourselves when others are in need or hurt that defines us as people and/or as individuals. Cause I know some so called Christians can conduct themselves wrongly, I swear by all that is ,that if someone 1700 yrs from now tries to put the Jesus my grandma taught me about in the westboro babtist bin , the detailed instructions left to my surviving heirs will be to invent a time machine to come back in time and kick my daddy in his jelly beans.and then to move forward in time to make sure they got the right guy . I jest ,but people who hear my god will forgive me. And no I didn’t think you wanted my take on religion, but I read your tripe ignoring the intellectual fallibility of artifacts whose questioned authenticity or relevancy for your biased take on Christianity and it adherents and your biased take on my research or gullibility . You expect me to believe you’ve studied anymore than anyone like me? Absurd, everything you have access to most everybody does( unless you hold security clearance of some import over mine) You think the archeological record is 100% accurately represented and that the don’t masses know better? academia teaches based solely by profit or political gain?and the masses don’t know better?Absurd! The average lay person wrote the books of half of what’s taught And when real” experts”or anyone write books ABSOLUTELY proving mainstream academia wrong they are dismissed or get ousted of tenor . You or this book has proved so very little it belongs with mainstream academia. Wake up, greed has rendered the scientific experts as trustworthy as a catholic priest in a boys orphanage pre-sex scandals. Look this artifact and others might be legit, but has no bearing on any nowadays documented public Christian liturgy or sect and therefore should be dismissed as much as someone going to Christian bookstore wearing a Judas Priest t-shirt. It might mean something, but probably not. Lets point out the criminals and leave the profiling to the police, mk?ultra cool. Oh , this is Shane – peace

      1. Really?
You said this.”And although it is a shame that some follow blindly the biblical texts ,(some at least) they are dated and signed and all referenced material can be carbon dated fairly accurately . “
Where are these text kept? Who are they signed by? Who did the carbon dating? Where can i see their signatures? These claims alone show you don’t know what you are talking about. Be honest, you haven’t studied much history at all have you? Not only are you blindly following the biblical text , apparently you are following the people telling you what to think as well.

  2. Stupid…
One artifact with no date or makers mark proves nothing, dwelling on it proves even less, but ones gullibility .

  3.
Sorry but the experts have examined, and at best the artifact in question is another roman mockery of Christianity or an attempt to preserve their idol worship.
As I demonstrate in this ebook, the claim above is false. The “best experts” did no such thing. Vested interests in Christianity took a shallow glance and made an erroneous conclusion.

I stopped reading your long, tedious and incomprehensible screed full of insults and nonsense right after that fallacious remark.

In the meantime, perhaps you would actually like to study the subject by reading my paper, rather than making unscientific comments based on ignorance. What I have stated above here and there is sound and scientific, instead of wave-of-the-hand dismissals based on blind belief and faith.

The scientific conclusion based on the best evidence by real experts on this subject is that the artifact in question is genuinely ancient and pre-Christian, having nothing to do with Christianity.
