2012: A New Beginning

“Join independent religion scholar Acharya S/D.M. Murdock for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure at the ancient site of Chichen Itza in the Yucatan, Mexico!”

The mysterious Maya seem to have come from nowhere, like time travelers of legend. Where did they come from? How did their culture develop? What were the beliefs upon which their extraordinary civilization was based?

We hear much about the Maya time-keeping, which undoubtedly was a major part of the Mayan spiritual or religious system. What else do we know about Mayan religion?

Interestingly enough, there are many important similarities between so-called Old World religions and those of the New World. Acharya/Murdock’s lecture in the Yucatan on December 21, 2012 will focus on the temple of Kukulkan at Chichen Itza or “El Castillo,” where the conference will be held that day. The talk will include a discussion of the correspondences between the Mexican religion, Judaism and Christianity, as well as between some Old and New World words and a brief discussion of DNA studies showing the spread of humanity into the Americas and the Yucatan.

“Acharya/Murdock’s lecture in the Yucatan on December 21, 2012 will focus on the religion and mythology of the Maya, including that of Kukulkan or Quetzalcoatl, near whose temple (‘El Castillo’) the conference will be held that day.”

One of the major correspondences between Christianity and the Mexican religion centers around the god Kukulkan/Quetzacoatl, whose temple looms over the site of Chichen Itza. Like Jesus, Quetzalcoatl is depicted as a bearded white man from the east who dies and descends into hell, as tradition holds of Christ. Both godmen are associated with the “morning star” or Venus. Both share many solar attributes, including representing the “son of the sun,” as Jesus’s “father,” the Jewish tribal god Yahweh, likewise was a solar deity in significant part.

Moreover, the cross figures prominently in the Mexican religion, as it does in Christianity, representing protection against evil spirits as well as the “four corners of the world,” as Church father Irenaeus said of the four gospels. Furthermore, the vernal equinox is important to both cults, with the chief Mexican solar festival held at that time, while Christ, of course, is depicted as crucified then. Like Jesus, the Mexican god Huitzilopochtli is portrayed as resurrecting from the dead, as is Papatzin or Lord Papan. Demonstrating a motif that probably extended to his namesake god himself, a king named Quetzalcoatl was said to have been born of a virgin mother.

How did all of these striking parallels come about? Come join us in the Yucatan to find out!

Rather than emphasizing the doomsday scenario, this lecture is titled “2012: A New Beginning” because the unity behind these various religions reveals we are one human race, with the same basic myths that changed as we spread out around the world. Here, then, is the “good news” for the future!

For more information on this unique adventure, see the message below.

Just a reminder of this momentous occasion – if you want to meet me in Mexico, check it out now!

Okay, folks. It’s a very rare occurrence when I make a public appearance – and this “coming out” party is going to be a doozy!

In December 2012, I am scheduled to speak at the archaeological site of Chichen Itza in the Yucatan, Mexico, and you are invited!

Yucatan with Gregg Braden -

This fabulous gathering will occur from December 13-22, 2012 and includes access onto the site on the very day of the winter solstice, a date claimed by some modern analysts to represent the end of the Mayan Calendar. This particular day is not represented in native Maya literature and tradition as the end of the calendar, but the winter solstice/”December 25th” has been celebrated in the northern hemisphere for thousands of years – and what a spectacular place to celebrate it!

The year 2012, of course, is notorious because it represents the end of one cycle in the Mayan calendar – not the end of the world. In fact, 2012 is the beginning of another cycle; thus, my talk at this gather in the Yucatan will be titled, “2012: A New Beginning.” Here’s the promotional summary:

At the gathering in December 2012, D.M. Murdock will be presenting a talk entitled, “2012: A New Beginning.” As a specialist in comparative religion and mythology, especially as concerns its nature-worshiping or astrotheological roots, Murdock will discuss the striking parallels between Christian and Mexican religion and mythology, demonstrating a unifying thread that underlies much of human culture. Here is the encouraging and good news for the coming age determined by Mesoamerican astronomy and calendric science: We are one human family whose cultural divisions are largely based on observations of our natural surroundings, rather than actual disparities. Our diverse global cultures emanate largely from the same root, with similar basic religious and mythological archetypes. Thus, instead of loathing our differences, we can celebrate our cultural uniqueness as part of the overall human experience.

Here is a short bio:

D.M. Murdock, also known as “Acharya S,” is an independent scholar of comparative religion and mythology. As an undergraduate, Murdock studied Classics, Greek Civilization, at Franklin & Marshall College, in Pennsylvania, USA. She also did post-graduate study with the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, Greece. Murdock has spent the past several decades studying both formally and informally mythology, religion, history, languages, archaeology, archaeoastronomy and other disciplines relating to the fields of religious history dating back thousands of years. In addition to English, she can read, speak and/or write French, Spanish, German, Italian, ancient and modern Greek, Latin, Portuguese and a smattering of other languages such as Sanskrit, Hebrew, Egyptian, etc. Murdock frequently does research in ancient languages such as Greek, Latin, Hebrew and Sanskrit, as needed for biblical studies and early Christian history.

Murdock/Acharya is the author of several books and many articles on the subjects of comparative religion and mythology, including The Christ Conspiracy, Suns of God, Who Was Jesus?, Christ in Egypt and others. Her work has been published both online and in print in a variety of media. She has also helped create several videos, including a two-hour interview of her speaking about related subjects. Murdock has appeared in a number of documentaries, including “God in the Box,” which has been featured at several film festivals. She has also appeared on numerous radio programs, including the Alan Colmes show.

(P.S. Also note that, separately from and in addition to the Power Places event at which I will be appearing, there will be another event at Chichen Itza that those fortunate enough to attend the Power Places event will also apparently be able to attend: A massive gathering of people from around the world, put on by UnifyEarth.com! Headliners in this “Urth” event, which will be broadcast simultaneously around the world via TV, the internet and mobile devices, include Sting and Carlos Santana. I am told that this concert and show – rumor has it that Cirque du Soleil may also be there – will be open to the public as well. So, again, those who attend my event will also be able to attend this one!)

  1. Sounds interesting.
Wish I could be there, but unfortunately its very doubtful I’d be able to afford to travel all the way to Mexico anytime soon.

  2. Oh SNAP!
    Wow, that is soooo cooool!!!

What better place to celebrate the end/beginning of the Mayan calendar on the winter solstice of December 2012 than Chichen Itza with a lecture by Acharya S? I’ve just got to be there. It would just be dumb to miss that. You go girl.

  3. Fifth Age
I see Acharya that your going to celebrate the fifth age of recorded cycles of 2150 years when our solar system aligns itself with the centre of our galaxy, the fifth recorded age of the Meso-Americans that is. I believe that the ancient Middle Eastern civilizations from the Mesopotamians to the Egyptians and all those with these civilisations also knew of this repeated cycle, but what is there to do at night when for the eighty thousand years before any civilizations began your part of a group of no more than 40 to 80 hunting and gathering people.

  4. December 2012 conference?
I am confused about the date of the event -December 2012. An one year wait?

  5. Its a done deal !
Air and hotel reservations….check. Villa Archeologica hotel just steps from the pyramid. December 19-24, 2012. I will be there looking for pagans, witches, shaman’s and the like. 330 days and counting !

    1. Countdown !
13 days and counting ! I will be there solo, vacationing for 5 days at Chichen Itza with a couple I am friends with. I am excited about meeting some new and interesting people ! Let me know if you are interesting. We are staying at Villa Archeologica next to the complex.

  6. A quiet voice from among the lost, its me.
You are my Teacher, Acharya S … I know it.
I have long given up pleasures and desires to learn, as have you.
    I only wish to learn.
Slip your spirit into a rob of silk and wings….and take to the air.
Tell me what you see in the distance, as this world is not long for light I fear, yet the honey drops, so sweet.
Teach me, in the ancient ways of your understanding and knowledge I quietly whisper.
But ask not the thumb of my right hand for payment……for the only thing I can offer you is my never ending or questioning friendship and desire to understand.
Take this chance on me, Good Lady, I beg.
Will you, now…before the Kali-Yuga begins.
nameless I am, unformed, in darkness….I await to be found and named anew.
Peace, do not forsake my plea … I only wish to hear your words.

  7. Going to Mexico
I’ve heard that it’s unsafe for Americans to travel to Mexico. Have I been misinformed? I would love to travel there just to meet you in person (if possible), hear your take on the step pyramids, smoke some good weed, and ‘shroom it up. It would only be more entertaining if Marilyn Manson was going to have a mini-concert (just a few songs) there, too. Let ’em all tumble out like circus freaks!

Also, will there be any video taken of the event?

    1. I’m told that Chichen Itza is very safe, a thousand miles away from any trouble. This tour company has been going there for something like 30 years, and they’ve never had any problem.

  8. Achararya S. I would like to communicate with you one on one. If it would be permissible , I am really interested. I am married and very intuitive. I do not have unballanced or romantic motivation. Thank you.

  9. I will be there at the pyramid complex from Dec 19th thru the 24th. Staying at the Villa Archeologica Hotel just steps away. A spiritual journey for me. I hope to hear and learn from many who will be attending. See you there !

  10. It will be an unforgettable experience!!
Please, I will travel in my own. Where is the location of the Villa Archeological Hotel mentioned above?
Regardless that is very unsafe for Americans to travel to Mexico, due to the gruesome brutal crimes commited against American Tourists, we will be all together, and we will watch for each other. Remember, don’t bring with you visible gold necklaces or gold rings, keep always your money in the front pockets, use a second wallet with small bills. Before traveling make sure you have a second photocopy of your entire passport, drivers’ license, and social security in a safe place. Never go around alone for yourself, always travel in groups of more than six persons. Do not trust any mexicans who will come to you with home-made elaborated food. For the males travelers, do not drink in any tavers, bars, or bodegas. Refuse to be lure by sexual adventures from mexican girls. If you follow my advise, you will return to the states alive. Thanks!! I will see you there!!

  11. Chichen-Itza was featured in “Against All Odds”
I have been fascinated with Chichen-Itza ever since I caught the 1984 movie Against All Odds. Director Taylor Hackford was tuned into the mystique of the Mayans long before the study of their architecture culture, and rituals became popular.

I believe that, as is the case with the majority of religions, astronomy influenced the development of the Mayan religion. I do not believe that the writings of the Bible were influenced by the Mayans. However, I believe that the writers of the Bible borrowed from ancient religions akin to that of the Maya, and, in the process of doing so, obfuscated the astronomy-based underpinnings in order to make the Bible writings more palatable to newer ages of civilization.

I hope that the Global Gathering will promote discussion in the mainstream about the origins of modern religions.

  12. I totally want to be there
Given I have the time and money to make a big trip of what, what events should I sign up for and join?

  13. Hi Derek!

It would be great to see you there. I can’t advise what you will want to do, but feel free to contact Power Places for more information – links are provided above. All I know is that I have been asked to present on December 21, 2012 at the site of Chichen Itza. I have no other role.

  14. Yes, that’s true, as did ancient Jews, Greeks, Phoenicians, Indians, Celts, Native Americans and many others. If we were to exclude from our studies all cultures who practiced human sacrifice, we would be left with few to study.

In the meantime, there remain some very fascinating correspondences between Mexican religion and Christianity – including the theme of human sacrifice, which is central to Christianity as well.

Since much of our Western culture is built on Judeo-Christianity, which centers on the sacrifice of God as a human, we would need to toss it all away as well.

Yet, we can study it and hopefully learn from the past and not repeat it!

    1. Dont forget the crusades!
When the mention of Mayans performing sacrifice made them not good to study or a barbaric people—–Yes its a crude tradition to kill someone to appease the gods — But were the Crusades not Christians killing millions because god said to?—– we need to learn from our history and improve on it to truly become enlightened.

Ill be there Dec 21, 2012

  15. Something tbat bothers me is that the Mayans were involved in human sacrifise and so I dropped anything Mayan.

  16. Pre-Columbian History of Mexico
I would be much more interested in learning the origin and ultimate fate of the Olmec.

  17. re: Cirque Du Soleil
Indeed Le Cirque Du Soleil will be there with a fourth mega-event that will broadcast live, from the Great Pyramid at Chichen Itza on the 2012 Winter Solstice.

On that night Cirque de Soleil will take over the entire Chichen Itza Temple complex.

The Chichen Itza Pyramid will be transformed into a stage, upon which the artists and performers of the Cirque de Soleil will work their incredible magic.! 🙂

  22. Acharya/M.D Murdoc’s ”MISTAKE”
Although the above mentioned article describes the tranquillity of the human race in uniting together over the boundaries of religion that encircles him,However it is not true that noticeable changes appear in life events of the human race,As in the above given statement it is described as the 21 of december. And here acharya ,you have been mistaken.Actually these changes are only practical by 23 december 15:30 (IST) onwards [Due to the change of the rahu-kethu in the zodiac .

    1. Thank you, but it appears that you have made a mistake, as I have said nothing of the sort, if I even understand what you are writing above, which is not clear.

All I have said is that my presentation will focus on the “good news” of an underlying, shared cultural heritage that dates back thousands of years. It has nothing to do with the zodiac.

I don’t think you read my article correctly in that regard.

      Cheers.

  24. Father / Musician
My son, Chad Knutsen has been invited down to the gathering and will be on top of one of the pyramids , invited by some of the Mayan elders. He is a film maker and will be filming the event. Much hype is out there as to what will transpire.I hope with all my heart it does become an oppurtunity for the positive…something sorely needed by a people(s) tired of gloom and doom. The future can be what we make it to be with the proper enlightenment. What we refer to as politics these days is something more akin to corporate facism. Perhaps if the people could open there eyes wide enough, we might affect a change in course before we fall over the edge.
