‘Ground Zero mosque’ imam: ‘I am a Jew, I have always been one’

Interesting slant on this controversial story by Jeffrey Goldberg, who reports that, at a memorial service for beheaded Jewish journalist Daniel Pearl, “Ground Zero mosque” imam Feisal Abdul Rauf declared: “I am a Jew.” Goldberg notes that “any Muslim imam who stands before a Jewish congregation and says, ‘I am a Jew,’ is placing his life in danger.” Naturally, Rauf would have to fear fellow members of his own “religion of peace,”™ whom Goldberg is suggesting would kill him for saying such a thing.

(But let’s build more barracks for the soldiers of Allah: “The mosques are our barracks, the domes our helmets, the minarets our bayonets and the faithful our soldiers.” –Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan)

Some might point out that the Koran is significantly based on the Bible and that Islamic/sharia law is basically Mosaic law, especially as found in Deuteronomy, so of course Rauf is a Jew. As Rauf himself says, “At the core of Shariah law are God’s commandments, revealed in the Old Testament and revised in the New Testament and the Quran.”

And as the Wiki article “Islam and Judaism” states:

The relationship between Islam and Judaism is a special and close one. The two religions share similar values, and Islam incorporates Jewish history as a part of its own. Muslims regard the Children of Israel as a central religious concept in Islam. Moses is mentioned in the Holy Qur’an more than any other prophet. Jews in turn see Muslims as prefect [sic] monotheists and as adherents of the Seven Laws of Noah. Thus according to Judaism, Muslims are seen as righteous people of God. The historical interaction of Judaism and Islam started in the 7th century AD with the origin and spread of Islam in the Arabian peninsula.

Because Islam has its foundation in Judaism and share a common origin in the Middle East through Abraham, both are considered Abrahamic religions. There are many shared aspects between Judaism and Islam; Islam is similar to Judaism in its fundamental religious outlook, structure, jurisprudence and practice…

Some excerpts from Goldberg’s article:

‘Ground Zero’ Imam: ‘I Am a Jew, I Have Always Been One’

The right-wing campaign against the so-called “Ground Zero mosque” includes vicious personal attacks on the Muslim cleric who leads the Cordoba Initiative, the organization behind the plan. I know Imam Faisal Abdul Rauf, and I know him to be a moderate, forward-leaning Muslim — yes, it is true he has said things with which I disagree, but I have never expected him to function as a member of the Zionist Organization of America.

In 2003, Imam Rauf was invited to speak at a memorial service for Daniel Pearl, the journalist murdered by Islamist terrorists in Pakistan. The service was held at B’nai Jeshurun, a prominent synagogue in Manhattan, and in the audience was Judea Pearl, Daniel Pearl’s father. In his remarks, Rauf identified absolutely with Pearl, and identified himself absolutely with the ethical tradition of Judaism. “I am a Jew,” he said.

There are those who would argue that these represent mere words, chosen carefully to appease a potentially suspicious audience. I would argue something different: That any Muslim imam who stands before a Jewish congregation and says, “I am a Jew,” is placing his life in danger. Remember, Islamists hate the people they consider apostates even more than they hate Christians and Jews. In other words, the man many commentators on the right assert is a terrorist-sympathizer placed himself in mortal peril in order to identify himself with Christians and Jews, and specifically with the most famous Jewish victim of Islamism….

“The Prophet said: Judgment Day will not come until you fight the Jews and kill them. The Jews will hide behind stones and trees, and the stones and tree will call: Oh Muslim, oh servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him except for the Gharqad tree, which is the tree of the Jews. I have heard that they are planting many of these trees now.”
