Here we strive to help others get out of or steer-way from cults. There are tactics you need to be made aware of so, below are just a few resources that provide further information on how to help a friend, family member or oneself:

I Used to Be in a Cult and Here's What It Did to My Brain

Quote:
"At 17, Diane Benscoter joined The Unification Church -- the religious cult whose members are commonly known as “Moonies.” After five long years, her distressed family arranged to have her deprogrammed. Benscoter then left The Unification Church, and was so affected by her experience that she became a deprogrammer herself. She devoted her time to extracting others from cults, until she was arrested for kidnapping. The shock of her arrest caused her to abandon her efforts for almost 20 years.

Now, after decades of research and study, Diane has begun to speak about her experiences. She recently completed a memoir describing her years as a member of The Unification Church and as a deprogrammer.

Furthermore, she has embarked on a new project to define “extremist viral memetic infections”. She believes that defining extremism as a memetic infection, from a cognitive neurological perspective, might allow us to develop better memes that would inoculate against the memes of extremist thought. These inoculating memes could prevent the spread of extremist viral memetic infections and their inherent dangers."

How Cults Gain Power Over an Individual: a True Story

"Brainwashing works in a layering process. First, the victim is isolated; second, limits are placed on what they see, hear and do; and finally, the person doing the brainwashing raises uncertainty about the victim's old beliefs and habits."

Not related to cults per say but, interesting so I figured I'd go ahead and post the below just to have it here.

God on the Brain

Quote:
"Rudi Affolter and Gwen Tighe have both experienced strong religious visions. He is an atheist; she a Christian. He thought he had died; she thought she had given birth to Jesus. Both have temporal lobe epilepsy. Like other forms of epilepsy, the condition causes fitting but it is also associated with religious hallucinations. Research into why people like Rudi and Gwen saw what they did has opened up a whole field of brain science: neurotheology. The connection between the temporal lobes of the brain and religious feeling has led one Canadian scientist to try stimulating them. (They are near your ears.) 80% of Dr Michael Persinger's experimental subjects report that an artificial magnetic field focused on those brain areas gives them a feeling of 'not being alone'. Some of them describe it as a religious sensation. His work raises the prospect that we are programmed to believe in god, that faith is a mental ability humans have developed or been given. And temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) could help unlock the mystery."

Watch the full documentary here:

It's possible that most of the time when people beleive they've seen ghosts or aliens or Jesus, what may be happening is a form of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy. I'm reminded of the apostle Paul and his "vision" with Jesus.

"Approximately 1 in 26 People in the US Will Develop Epilepsy at Some Point in their Lifetime."

Home Schooling and Cults:

Quote:
I Was Trained for the Culture Wars in Home School, Awaiting Someone Like Mike Pence as a Messiah

"I grew up in the far-right evangelical conservative (Christofascist) movement; specifically, I was homeschooled and my parents were part of a subculture called Quiverfull, whose aim is to outbreed everyone for Jesus. I spent my teen years being a political activist. I was taught by every pastor I encountered that it was our job as Christians to outbreed the secularists (anyone not a far-right evangelical Protestant) and take over the government through sheer numbers. I was part of TeenPact, Generation Joshua and my local Teenage Republicans (TARS).

When the Tea Party rose in 2009, that was my culture. The Tea Party was step one. I was laying the groundwork for those elections in 2006. These people didn’t come out of the blue like it seemed. This plan, this Christofascist takeover of the US government, has been in the works for decades. When evangelical conservatism started becoming popular and more mainstream around the 1970s, the foundation was being laid for the tragedy playing out right now.

Evangelical conservatives started taking over their local republican parties and founding organizations like Operation Rescue, Home-school Legal Defense Association, Family Research Council and Focus on the Family, just to name a few."

"The U.S. Department of Education says that over 1.7 million children in the United States are home-schooled. But what happens when homeschooling stops being about education, and instead becomes insulation? Isolation? Indoctrination? This broadcast isn't a referendum on the concept of homeschooling. It's an exploration into some of the more extreme religious home-school environments, and into the lives and personal stories of those who experienced them."

TTA Podcast 267: Homeschool Cults (Part 1 of 2)

The Cult Next Door

Scientology includes plenty of it's own home-schooling too.
