Bible-abuse victim: ‘I’m a psychic slave to religion out of fear’

I received the following message from an individual obviously in severe distress. He asked me for help in overcoming Bible abuse that had left him crippled with fear for decades. I sent him a copy of my book The Gospel According to Acharya S, which can serve as a bridge to my more scholarly works and which has been helpful to others caught up in biblical doctrines of greed for heaven and fear of hell.

There are support groups online for victims of cultic abuse, and there are professional counselors who deal with this sort of brainwashing, but not nearly enough for the amount of victims globally. My Bible-abused correspondent’s suggestion for specific deprogramming materials is a good idea. Reading about his state of terrorized enthrallment frankly appalled and repulsed me.

I have been a psychic slave of religions for decades since being brainwashed as a child. I break free on the surface only for brief times, and I then enslave myself again. Now, I am supposed to convert to Orthodox Christianity in a few months, and I have to accept Mary’s perpetual virginity to become a convert. That is insane, and evidence of a sex cult, as far as I am concerned. (Actually, it is all insane, but I just will not break free of the brainwashing due to fears and brainwashing.)

“The inner conflict is awful, and I am wasting precious little life I have left all the time struggling over it.”

HellThe inner conflict is awful, and I am wasting precious little life I have left all the time struggling over it. Deep, deep down I still feel like if I walk away, I might burn in hell…. I just might end up wrong before a wrathful God. How sick.

I know it is wrong and sick, but I still can’t shake it. The brainwashing is so deep. I am going to dig deep, really deep, and liberate myself with your help and the good work of others. It is my life goal to die free and with as little brainwashing as possible. Thanks for your encouragement and kindness.

I am on disability and can only buy one of your books every few months. Do you think you could suggest your books one at a time in a way to be therapeutic and designed to help me liberate myself once and for all? Where would you suggest starting?

Have you thought about putting together a nice deprogramming book series? A “catechism” toward free thinking? The brainwashing is so deep in some of us. I spent (I shamefully admit) 20 years a Christian fundamentalist.

I will look at all this information too. I watched you on Youtube for two hours today. I loved it.

I am thinking about others like me too. I bet there are some prisoners, poor, shut-ins, etc., just like me who need some liberation. I am going to think it over and talk to someone about a what a non-profit consists of. Sending people books like yours can be very powerful and life changing.

Thank you so much for the book, the information on your sites and for all you do.

The Gospel According to Acharya SI’m wagering this sort of suffering is a very widespread problem. I am fortunate not to have been abused by Christianity and the Bible, such that I do not fear the giant biblical bogeyman in the sky with his eternal hellfire and torment. In fact, as I write in The Gospel and elsewhere, such a “god” would not be a deity of any worth, terrorizing puny and powerless little humans into submission to “his” will. I reject such a tyrannical and hateful “god,” who is certainly not “loving” or “merciful” but is loaded with ego and the worst of human characteristics.

It is a shameful condition of the human species to rely on the stick more than the carrot as a motivational tool. If we wish to create a more healthy, loving and happy society, we need to focus on those aspects, not on punishment and fear. The bottom line is that no good god would go out of his/her way to bully and brutalize humanity.

In addition to support groups and deprogramming counselors, it sounds like a class-action lawsuit might be in order for various religious organizations that abuse people mentally, emotionally and sometimes physically. It would also be great to be able to provide copies of my books to others, as this individual suggests, through a non-profit organization.

As concerns my books, I do recommend anyone in this state read The Gospel, as it has been said to be very liberating. If one is a Christian, I advise moving next to Who Was Jesus?, which details the problems with New Testament and historical Jesus scholarship.

My book Did Moses Exist? The Myth of the Israelite Lawgiver dissects important parts of the Old Testament, for those tormented by bibliolatry. Reading The Christ Conspiracy: The Greatest Story Ever Sold would also be helpful, but it should be kept in mind that I have a second edition in the works. Next would be Suns of God: Krishna, Buddha and Christ Unveiled and Christ in Egypt: The Horus-Jesus Connection, which show the mythology behind the Bible stories, such that one need not take them literally.

Studying the concepts of heaven, hell and the devil around the world and in different religions and mythologies is quite helpful to understand the development of these ideas by human beings. These ideas about an afterlife depend largely upon era and location, and the different notions reflect these are manmade concepts, not ultimate reality.

Another resource that would be helpful is my video “Please respect my religion!”:

Studying the field of mythicism or the notion that many biblical characters are mythical rather than historical can also be helpful:

  1. Thanks for the article DM. That actually helped to give me a better idea of which of your books to read next, as I have been curious if there was any particular order.

I can’t say for myself that I was ever abused by Christianity, but certainly a little peer pressure at times. Fact is, I became a Universalist thinker towards the end of my Christianity. I just couldn’t buy into the whole hell concept because I felt it contradicted the whole forgiveness and unconditional love ideal. So, that just led me to more skeptical thinking, thus finally leaving organized religion behind. I’m much happier, and at peace, being agnostic and would never turn back to such brainwash no matter what the religion.

  2. The thing is not to fret about getting rid of it, but to simply acknowledge it. Acknowledge it each time it pops up, but don’t cling to it and let it go each time, yes, just like in Zen meditation. Opposing it only makes it stronger. Do physical things like opening a window or a door to “let it out” or flushing a toilet, or washing it down the drain. One can “talk to it” and say things like “Nice to see you today, but I have work to do. Goodbye.” These hell fire and damnation memes implanted at very early ages probably cannot be gotten rid of, but they can be dealt with. I stopped trying to get rid of them long ago. Knowledge and practicing letting go helps greatly. Therapists who specialize in such would probably be a great help.

  3. The only way I came out of my brainwashing after 4 decades (after being brainwashed in a fundamentalist church-school for the first 8 school years of life and being around it 24/7 during my childhood and early teens) was through some serious studying on the internet (I finally had TIME after raising two kids mostly on my own with almost no support).

I finally found out that the word “hell” in the Bible was translated from 4 words, none of which meant a place of eternal torment. In fact, the word “eternal” was translated from other words (aion, etc.) and could not possibly have meant “eternal.” The Bible, when translated properly, does not even TEACH eternal torment. (I found most of my information from the Tentmaker site, which is a Christian Universalist site, but a very good one, nonetheless).

After finally liberating myself from religion (because of the brave and furious souls out there who have been tirelessly fighting against it), I got out of a horribly dysfunctional relationship and started untangling a very painful, chaotic past and slowly began finding out who I really was.

It has been a wonderful, terrifying, painful, beautiful, exhausting, depressing, soul-crushing, enlightening experience.

    All hail Google!

  4. To be fair, my family wasn’t they type of extremely devout Christians. My parents are quite mild and we don’t usually talk about it. It wasn’t until I read the bible when I was around 9 did I become extremely religious. My departure of Christianity started when I read Who Was Jesus? Fingerprints of the Christi which exhausted all Chrisitian apologies taught in my religion courses. I know that a lot of Church ministers, priests, and NT scholars are secret fans of your work, I guess I’m not the only person from the lgbt community who are freed by your books from the shackles of mental oppression by Christianity.

  5. Even though I was a believer of close to 30 years, I left the Mormon church almost 20 years ago. Yet, I still get thoughts in my mind like “The LDS church is true.” or “Its leaders are inspired of god.” or “God exists.” I hope in the future, we’ll have the technology to erase certain unwelcome memories. Nonetheless, I still own and read your books, Acharya, reading the fascinating “Did Moses Exists” right now. Thank you, Acharya, for your research, compilation of contemporary historians, and modern scientists and academic scholars.

  6. Learn the best religious jokes. Learn to tell them, learn to laugh at them.
Watch a bunch of old Sam Kinison and George Carlin videos on Youtube. Newbies like Tim Minchin are fun also. Read Acharya’s books. Read Joseph Campbell and Sir James George Fraser. I had to read Campbell and Fraser before I read Acharya. I wouldn’t have understood her work otherwise. I’m sure there are many others.

Q: Why do you always take two Baptists fishing with you?
A: If you only take one, he’ll drink ALL your beer.

  7. Lose the fear. As Lucifer says in Paradise lost, “Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven”

  8. I went through the same thing as a former Catholic and also a convert to Orthodoxy. It took me two decades of continuous self education to get over it. I also recommend books by Bart Ehrman. Though he does believe Jesus existed, he doesn’t believe he was God. His books were very helpful to me as was Elaine Pagels book, The Origin of Satan and this website on Religious Trauma Syndrome: http://www.journeyfree.org.
My advice to you, born out of experience, is to stay away from Christianity and begin to study true religious history. Michael Tsarion also writes about astrotheology. I do believe in the Divine, but we were taught a lot of lies and the reason was for power, money and control of the people. No-one should have to live with such debilitating fear. I understand what you are going through. Know that you are not alone.

  9. I recently received an e-mail from Stellar House Publishing that published much of D.M. Murdock’s works. Indeed, she has left the world a legacy of research that will free the human mind to advance to the next level of development based upon truth and integrity.

The Stellar House e-mail provided a wealth of information for anybody trying to reach for the truth about the origins of man’s religions. I personally thank them for I will make use of the list of libraries and e-mail list of radio talk shows to also inform people of the development of the Judaic, Christian, and Islamic religions from the ancient civilization of Egypt.

My 7th book, Obama, Islam and Benghazi, published for people world-wide in 2016, exposes the deceit of President Obama and Hillary Clinton, describes why the Qur’an is the source of discontent in many countries, and lists 36 questions for the Select Committee on Benghazi.

The book overview and press releases for Obama, Islam and Benghazi may be found by placing an Internet search on my name – Nicholas Ginex or visit the website, http://www.futuneofgodamen.com

I shall always remember the contributions made by Acharya’a books and articles. She has made a difference in helping people to understand the development of God. A concept that can still be used to elevate the aspirations of many and live productive lives based upon integrity and truth.
